COFASTRANS

The new generation of port terminals

The new Container Vessel Fast Transhipment System – COFASTRANS – enables a transformational increase in productivity when loading and unloading large container ships.

Berth layouts have not significantly changed since the 1960s. As vessels get larger, ports will find their efficiency limited by their current conventional layouts. COFASTRANS provides an innovative and practical alternative, bringing ships into the heart of port operations. This allows ports to operate in a more efficient, sustainable and flexible manner with potential for further growth in the future.

How does it work?

COFASTRANS is a flexible concept that means every deployment is completely bespoke, customised to the needs and environment of the individual port.

It combines a novel portal crane design with an indented berth layout, placing vessels at the heart of port operations with direct access to the shoreside container stacks on both sides of the ship. Together, these two elements present a new approach to port design that solves many of the challenges and efficiencies faced in ports today.

Indented berths can be integrated into existing ports. They reduce the length of shoreline required and relieve congestion as they allow for more space on the quayside. Additionally, indented berths mean shorter distances when transporting cargo from the ship, as well as protecting the vessel from environmental hazards.

The new portal crane places double the hooks and spreaders over each ship, reducing the average trolley travel distances and length of time in port. Their design can be tailored to each port with the flexibility to respond to changes in technology and ship design.
